I don’t know of anyone in the last several decades who hasn’t heard of the Wizard of Oz, that wonderful musical journey down the yellow brick road with a teenage Judy Garland singing her heart out. It’s brought out of the MGM archives every now and then and played to another generation who are delighted with the story. Besides being entertaining it teaches us four valuable themes about life.

First, that life seems better elsewhere – like over the rainbow. But in fact, there’s no place like home. What you have and have been given is usually pretty good if you can recognize and accept it. Dorothy wanted to explore the world beyond Kansas but after experiencing it realizes the farm with loving Aunt Em and the farm hands is pretty wonderful.

Secondly, no one is ever really alone. When lost in a strange world and you need friends in life there will always be a Tin Man, a Cowardly Lion and a Scarecrow to stand by you.

Thirdly, there will always be threats and challenges in life- from the spooky forest to the Wicked Witch of the West. But there’s always good in the world as well. That’s why Glinda, the good witch comes to help Dorothy when she truly needs her.

And Fourth, Wizards are not always infallible. Sometimes they can lead you astray. The journey itself down the yellow brick road was actually more valuable for Dorothy than finding the wizard because she learned so much about life and herself. She gained confidence and learned to trust her friends, finally finding her own way home.

How does this relate to an acting career?

1 .Over the Rainbow – I’ve never met an actor who didn’t at some time resent that another actor had gotten cast in a role he wanted or got a contract role on a TV series or a B’way audition or achieved movie star status. Things always look better when someone else possesses them.

Lesson: A smart actor has to be wary of jealousy and resentment. You rarely see the real or downside to being a movie star or what it would be like playing someone else’s role. Accept that who and what you are is wonderful and that your path is yours alone. Enjoy the work and the path. That is real success!

2. Friends – are wonderful if they support your agenda-what you’re trying to accomplish-as the whimsical trio did for Dorothy. They dropped everything to help her get home.
Lesson: Make sure your “friends” are true friends. When your “crowd” however consists of other out of work actors who are resentful and hostile, beware! They can definitely pull you down. Hang around with winners and you become one! Join a Mastermind of like-minded, success-oriented actors!

3. Threats and challenges – Fortunately, there really aren’t people in this world whose goal is to destroy actors but there are some industry pro’s including acting teachers/divas, casting directors, film directors or others who may discourage, demean or insult performers. They’re to be avoided “like the plague” and ignored. The Wicked Witch of the West shouldn’t have any control over you. Tell them to “be gone!” or you’ll “drop a house on them!” (That’s what Glinda the good witch advises Dorothy to do).

Lesson: No one can tell you if you’re good or bad or even if you should consider another career. An acting teacher or casting director shouldn’t use a class or a paid workshop in which to damage your spirit and psyche. Thankfully, there are very few of these people left in the business. They seem to have died off with the “studio” era.

4. Wizards – Perhaps we can translate that to mean hotshot agents, managers, those who promise to get you there but can’t seem to get the balloon off the ground. Or when they do, you’re not aboard. Most agents I know want to see you succeed but some don’t have the connections to get you in the door, don’t understand your type and range or just don’t “get” you. Nobody’s perfect.

Lesson: Don’t trust any one person or agency to make your career happen. Move on. Dorothy eventually didn’t need the wizard to get her home. She had the power of the ruby red slippers all the time. And by wishing and expressing her goal, she made it happen on her own. So can you! Finding a good agent takes time and you need to be selective. Don’t rush to find that “match” any more than you would to find a personal “Match” in your life. It’s too important a decision to just “grab the first offer”.

So…the allegory of The Wizard of Oz is a good example for actors or anyone on a life journey. Just find your team-your tin man, scarecrow and cowardly lion to help you on your way. Your team is your acting coach, headshot photographer, videographer/editor, graphic artist,webmaster and Career Coach all of whom can guide you, give you advice, drop everything to help you on your path and even rescue you from mean spirited “witches”. So if you’re not in Kansas anymore-it’s OK. You can safely get down that Yellow Brick Road.

People sponsored into a MLM network marketing company are commonly faced with two minor problems.

1. They have no idea how to generate leads or sponsor others into the MLM network marketing opportunity they have joined, and…

2. Even if they make lots of sales and sponsor a few others into their downline, they probably have no idea how they did it and therefore have no knowledge to pass on to those they recruit.

Without knowing HOW they did what they did, they cannot teach it to their downline. This means each new downline member they sponsor is faced with two minor problems…

Sound familiar?

Two minor problems make a bigger problem, and this is why MOST new network marketing entrepreneurs fail. Their upline sponsored them into this MLM program by luck or accident. Their upline, being as ignorant as the new business owner they just sponsored, has no way to train that new business owner on how to sponsor individuals into THEIR downline. The new business owner now has to also rely on luck and accident to build his or her downline. Sometimes diligence and patience, which are rare commodities in someone who has invested money in a network marketing program, will overcome the lack of a system or training program. Sheer persistence DOES pay off in the long run, but most people will drop out long before the law of averages kicks in.

Throw into the mix that EVEN WITH a good MLM sponsoring system in place, network marketing empires and MLM downlines are not built overnight. Many who sign up for a network marketing program start having doubts about their decision as soon as they realize nobody is going to beg to join their program or hand them money.

This is usually about day two of any serious attempt to get the business off the ground.

OKAY, THAT’S THE PROBLEM. WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?

First, anyone who wishes to be successful in MLM network marketing has to either create or learn an effective MLM sponsoring system.

For most of us, the single most effective way to sell a network marketing product or service is through…you guessed it…networking. Most products sold through MLM network marketing programs are not that much better than what can be found at a store or local office. The key reason most people buy is because they know and like the individual involved. Let’s face it; do all those people buy Avon lipstick because it is great, or because the distributor is a friend of theirs?

Of course, there are examples of extraordinary products and almost obsessive brand loyalty, but, even so, most people bought the product in the first place because they knew and trusted the person marketing it or were referred by someone who knows them…hence, the term “network marketing”.

The most effective way to “network” is to give something of value to a group or community without asking for sales. As people in that group come to know and trust you, they also begin to know about you, including the product or service you are selling. This has three benefits.

1. As people in your network become more comfortable with who you are and what you do, you are more likely to make sales.

2. As they become more familiar and comfortable with you and your product, perhaps through their own use, they refer others to you, thus widening your network.

3. As you become successful at making sales, it becomes easier to hold yourself up as an example to those you are seeking to sponsor into your MLM network marketing business.

However, as the saying goes, the only job you start at the top is digging a hole. Everybody has to go through that startup period when they are NOT rich, famous, and a shining example to all who seek to emulate their success.

When you are still working two jobs to make ends meet, dressing your kids in rags, taking peanut butter and bologna sandwiches to work in a leaky bag, and driving the old jalopy with the taped-in window, it is hard to convince someone that they can get rich doing what you are doing!

SO USE THE SAME NETWORKING PRINCIPLES TO GET PEOPLE IN YOUR DOWNLINE!

Since you cannot use your personal success as an example to lure people to your MLM network marketing opportunity, do the same thing you do to sell product. Be an honest and honorable example of a network marketer to all people and give more than you get.

You will probably NOT be able to recruit within the community in which you normally find yourself. THEY will want to see YOUR success before they can start thinking about joining you. However, at any given time around the world, there are hundreds of thousands of people eagerly seeking a business opportunity. They have the dream and the hope, and somewhere in that teeming mass are the great performers of tomorrow who will help make you wealthy…in more ways than just in dollars. If you can effectively reach them with your message AND TEACH THEM how to do the same, both you and they will be successful. If you DO have an effective and TEACHABLE MLM sponsoring system in place, they in turn will be able to train THEIR downlines to be successful as well.

AN EFFECTIVE MLM SPONSORING SYSTEM CAN CREATE SUCCESS FOR ALL IT TOUCHES!

One of the most common ways of attempting to sponsor people into an MLM network marketing opportunity is by purchasing leads (cold calls are SO passé’). However, it is stranger talking to stranger, and it is possible, nay, probable, that the stranger on the other end of the phone or email has been burned before. Therefore, it becomes necessary to create your own system, or borrow one.

This system will have two major parts.

First, you must offer something of genuine value that will attract and entice the prospective member to take a look…not at your product or opportunity, but at whatever is being offered. This can be a course, class, information paper, report, or book…anything of genuine value. The item offered, by the way, must allow you to remain in contact with the person as a bond of trust is formed. That is why there are so many newsletters and email courses around.

It is imperative that the offer be of genuine value and offered without sales pitches, restrictions, or limitations other than the opportunity to stay in contact with the person. The person must be free to turn their back and leave without buying, or buying into, anything, yet taking value with them.

Second, you must make every attempt to help that person achieve their goal. Even if you are not capable of DOING anything for them, the simple act of showing them that you genuinely care about their desires, goals, and dreams will, in many cases, be sufficient to strengthen the respect and trust they have for you.

As with network marketing itself, they will know what you are trying to do and appreciate the fact that you are a real person offering genuine friendship and value who is not trying to flim-flam them into something they do not wish to do.

If you follow these two steps, you will generate your own leads, and they will be responsive, as they will be looking to you not as a stranger trying to sell them something but as a friend who is trying to help them.

Heavy-hitters earn lots of money in network marketing. Why? Because they have colossal organizations brimming with talent and energy. If you are like most, you want to be just like them (you know, riding horses on the beach in Puerto Vallarta while the super-leverage of your enormous team continues to pump in big checks whether you work or play).

Obviously, anyone who has created a situation like the one above deserves a little bit of consideration when you are deciding to join a network marketing company. But, here’s the dilemma: if these Richy Riches are always off jet-setting and mingling with other top leaders in the company, why would they pay any attention to little old you? How do you know you won’t just end falling through the cracks? Wouldn’t it be better to join with someone who is always available to personally mentor you (even if they only earn $4K or so a month?).

Well, I am not going to answer the question posed in this article, “Should You Join with a Heavy-Hitter?” However, here are three things to consider:

1. Hearing 10-minutes of personalized instruction from a 7-Figure earner is more valuable than hours with a newbie.

2. Most Heavy-Hitters have personal assistants who take very good care of the remedial, “learning-curve” type issues of getting your business going. However, once you prove yourself in even the slightest way, you can often secure more privatized time with the heavy-hitter. Another little secret is that a true heavy-hitter usually has unusually copious amount of time freedom, and gets a kick out of investing some of that time in the raising up of grassroots leaders.

3. Rarely does a person in network marketing outperform their sponsor (don’t ask me to explain why). Thus, if that usually holds true, why consider joining under anybody who is not a major player in network marketing?

To close, I have one last addition to number three, although it is “usually true” that people rarely outperform their sponsor, it is “sometimes true.” And I would go so far as to say that every “heavy-hitter” I know outperformed their sponsor. Thus, maybe the whole question to ask yourself is better positioned like this, “What will it take for Me to become a Heavy-Hitter in MLM?” A lazer-like focus in that direction will yield you the biggest results. Whether or not you are an Obama supporter, his campaign proved one thing – his campaign’s marketing strategies worked like magic!

Obama literally came from “nowhere” to become Leader of the Free World.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been working really hard the past 12-18 months – and making less. I’m all about using whatever will work. Aren’t you?

Einstein said, ”The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.”

In these challenging times, “business as usual” just doesn’t cut it.  It’s going to take a different way – a NEW way - of thinking about things. Obama’s campaign has shown us a different way – clearly a way that works!

Obama had to tackle 2 major issues: 

    1) He was a relative newcomer to the political scene without a large support base to draw upon. 

    2) With limited financial resources, he needed to overcome the the Clinton “money machine”.

“Business As Usual” wasn’t going to cut it for the Obama campaign. He was forced to devise a NEW strategy to win his election. He followed 4 steps:

I. He Created A “Bottom’s Up” Unique Selling Proposition [USP] - “Change We Can Believe In”

Most candidates (and business people and sales people), sit in a room “thinking up stuff” that they think might appeal to the public. One good friend who is also a REALTOR used a tag line on all of her marketing, “We Do Our Home Work.” Catchy. Clever. But how effective is it in getting me to choose her as my REALTOR?

What Obama did was a classic marketing strategy: he held “focus groups” in the form of “town meetings”. He ASKED people what they wanted in a candidate. He listened first and THEN came up with a USP based on what he was told. People wanted change. Ergo the USP “Change We Can Believe In”.

II. He Built An On-Line Community  

Now the campaign has its USP, it was time to take it to the “market”. What was so unique about what the Obama campaign did was to make extensive use of internet social media strategies – FaceBook, a blog, a website, YouTube videos. It probably started out due to lack of funding. However, the campaign utilized these tools so brilliantly that they ended up literally circumventing traditional media (newspapers, TV) to talk directly to their public. When a negative story would break on the news, the on-line community not only knew about it but had already heard Obama’s side of the story!

III. He Lowered The Barrier to “Buy In”

Instead of looking for huge donors to fund the campaign, the campaign asked for $5 donations! $5!! It was a complete game-changer. I remember thinking, “Heck, I don’t know if I want to vote for the guy – but I’ll give him $5 to give him a chance at being on the ballot.” But once I made the $5 ”commitment” – now I’m no longer standing on the outside looking in. Now I’m engaged! Now I’m watching the campaign with interest! And once I’m on the “inside” – they not only asked for my vote, they asked me to help get the vote out!

IV. Post Election Follow-Up

Even though the election is past, I am still being solicited for input. Obama is brilliantly allowing the community to shape policy. He’s converting ”Insiders” into Advocates! There was just an article in the Chicago Tribune on Weds, Jan 14th about “the country’s most potent political machine” and how Obama is using it to force his agenda on Congress. Do you let your advocates inform YOUR agenda?

During the Great Depression, huge fortunes were made by many. The Kennedy, Rothschild and Rockefeller families all dramatically increased their fortunes throughout the Depression. But it wasn’t just the rich who got richer – many ordinary citizens found a way to not only survive but thrive during a poor economy.
